The future is a mysterious and exciting place. Just about everything we do here at Aberdeen Hall revolves around the future of our students. One of my past Directors would often to say: "We do not see the student of today, but rather we visualize the individual or person he or she will become in the future, and it is our responsibility to take that very seriously." With regard to the future, there are so many considerations. Think about the accelerated rate of change in areas of information technology (due primarily to the exponentially improving speed of microprocessors). Other factors to contemplate…

Note to self -- Always be prepared with a good question. I had my chance to shine and I missed it!In January, I had the pleasure of spending the better part of a day with Sir Ken Robinson, one of the leading voices in creativity and innovation in education. Mr. Robinson also has the distinction of presenting one of the first TED Talks ten years ago. Some people say that Ted Talks made Sir Ken, however fans of Sir Ken will argue that he made TED Talks! His video has been viewed by an estimated 350 million people in more than 160 countries. As one English educator friend said to me:"What Paul is to…

Aberdeen Hall an accessible and inclusive community. Having enjoyed almost 20 years in independent education, I have occasionally found myself debating the accessibility of independent schools.  From the inception of Aberdeen Hall, the school’s administration and Board of Directors have designed a school that is accessible to a wide variety of students and families.A diverse population makes for a healthy population; this includes students with different ethnicities, religions, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. Although, Kelowna can be a rather homogenous city when compared to larger urban…

"No Mind Left Behind" -Adam Cox What's the Secret to Success? "We get to know each child as an individual, find out what he or she needs, and then we do our best to give it to them." -Dana McCauley Dana McCauley is widely recognized as one of the best principals in North America. This is based primarily on her school's consistent achievement gains in standardized testing. She knows that fulfilling student's needs is very individual, and the institution that does this the best will have students who achieve the most. At Aberdeen Hall, we agree. In order to continue to be a leader in education, we…

Why have exams? Here's why.... Aberdeen Hall prides itself on offering a robust combination of empirically proven methods of instruction. Evaluation and assessment are integral aspects of teaching and learning, and exams are an important component of evaluation. Exams are a traditional form of evaluation and have numerous benefits. We start the exam process in Grade 5 and sequence accordingly until Grade 12.  In Grade 5 and 6, teachers offer a great deal of structured support throughout the entire process. In the middle years, we issue a detailed study skills package complete with directions and…

The Wonderful Academic Cycle "Every day you make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb."                 -  Winston Churchill A wonderful metaphor for both the ascension of a growing independent school, as well as, a dynamic and stimulating academic year at Aberdeen Hall. Our 'ever-ascending journey' occurs in 10 month academic blocks. The students know these blocks as…
