...To make a tax deductible donation to the Athletics and Wellness Centre
By Steve Woloshyn, CPA
With the skies getting increasingly grey, days getting shorter and nights getting longer, I think we can all agree that it would be wonderful to see our children playing in a bright, brand new facility! We know you have many options when it comes to end of year giving; so why not give the gift of a brand new Athletics and Wellness Centre? The kids will love you for it.
Most of you know that you can donate to charity with a simple click of a mouse or by writing a cheque, but did you know that you could donate stock? It is the most efficient way to donate. Since capital gains tax does not apply and you will receive a donation receipt for the FMV (fair market value) of the security, it is a wonderful way to benefit both you and our school. Gifts of publicly traded securities are simple to make; consult your financial advisor to decide which investments make the most financial and philanthropic impact.
More information on donations can be found on the CRA website HERE.
You may ask yourself how much should I donate? When people search for clues about how much to give, they’re told that it’s a “deeply personal decision,” “with no right answer” that they must somehow make on their own. Left to our own devices, we do what we always do to figure out what’s acceptable: look around to see what other people are doing, particularly those with similar incomes and wealth.
Charitable donations are a great way to support this cause, and they can also help improve your personal tax situation for 2021. It’s not how much you give, it’s that you give - we appreciate your support in the past and continued support in the future.
