Aberdeen Hall is thrilled to announce the official opening of its new, state-of-the-art Design Studio, generously sponsored by Callie Craven, Stephen Dyck, and their sons, Julian (Grade 7) and Hudson (Grade 11). This new STEM-focused space is part of Aberdeen Hall's multi-million-dollar Phase 6 Capital Project, which also included the recent opening of the Athletics and Wellness Centre, completing the school's master campus plan.
The Design Studio offers students hands-on, experiential learning in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), and artificial intelligence (AI) and they’ve had the opportunity to explore advanced programming in robotics, coding, 3D printing, laser cutting, and AI technologies.
The Design Studio has been buzzing with activity since its opening in September. Students have eagerly embraced the space, choosing to spend their lunch hours working on projects, coding drones, and tinkering with their robots in preparation for an upcoming robotics competition in Vancouver. The excitement surrounding the technologies available has fueled a surge in student interest in STEM learning.
“Our students now have a space with cutting-edge technology and tools right at their fingertips, where creativity can really soar,” said Derek Cutler, Director of Technology. “From coding drones to experimenting with AI, they’re diving into the kinds of hands-on problem-solving that will shape their futures. It’s an exciting time to be learning—these kids are getting ready to take on the world, and I have no doubt they’ll be leading the way in whatever’s next.”
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, attendees enjoyed a live demonstration of the technologies available in the space. Grade 7 student Julian Dyck showcased a drone flight path he had coded himself, as well as the laser cutter's ability to engrave a replica of his face on a wooden coaster.
Kylee Wilson, Director of Development, highlighted the importance of community support for the dynamic and evolving programming in the space: "This studio represents the unwavering commitment of our families, whose generosity continues to shape our innovative campus."
Aberdeen Hall is grateful to all those who have made this exciting addition possible, especially Callie, Stephen, Hudson, and Julian. Your generosity will ensures that future generations of students are equipped with the skills and experiences to help them thrive.
