October 8, 2024September Mental Health Minute with Ms. K and Ms. Hanley

There’s something exciting, nerve-racking, and special about stepping back into these halls. September is the promise of new discoveries, challenges, and friendships through learning and laughter. It’s also a crucial time for students to learn new skills that can support their mental health and wellbeing.

In the Middle School, Grade 6 classes were introduced the concept of holistic wellness, focusing on the wheel of wellbeing. Students learned about maintaining balance in different areas of their lives, which helps set them up for success as they transition to middle school. Want to try it out? Check out this resource from Kids Help Phone.

In addition to this, Middle School students had the chance to create their own "Feel Good Playlist." This activity helped students understand the powerful role music can play in supporting mental health. Research shows that music can reduce stress, improve mood, and even enhance focus, making it a great tool for promoting emotional wellbeing. Give it a listen!

Lastly, we’ve introduced a gratitude board in the Middle School counselling office, where students can express things they’re thankful for. Research shows that practicing daily gratitude can significantly improve mental health in youth by enhancing positive emotions, reducing stress, and fostering a greater sense of well-being. Gratitude helps rewire neural pathways associated with positive thinking and emotional regulation, which is crucial during the developmental phase of adolescence when mental health challenges often emerge. Regular gratitude practice also promotes resilience, helping youth better cope with life stressors by focusing on what they appreciate rather than what they lack.

In the High School we have spent September checking in with new and returning students, supporting transitions into new grades and stressors around University applications. Leaders for The Hill, our leadership and wellness initiative for Grades 10 - 12, have begun meeting to develop a plan for this year's retreat.

Tip for parents: Encourage your child to keep a daily gratitude journal where they write down three things they are thankful for. This simple practice can cultivate an optimistic mindset and improve their emotional well-being over time. You could also ask your kids to share moments from the day that made them feel grateful, happy, or at ease – this can be done at the dinner table, on the drive to school, or as part of a bed time routine.

We are committed to supporting your children as they navigate this school year, and we are excited about the positive impact these initiatives are already having on their overall wellbeing.

Sincerely,

Ms. K & Ms. Hanley
