Over the past month, the Grade 11/12 Outdoor Education PE class has been hard at work cleaning and revitalizing the trail system surrounding our campus, which we are entrusted to protect.
Our first major initiative of the year was the creation of a story pole in collaboration with Indigenous artist and master carver Darren McKenzie. Over the course of a week, Darren worked with our students, guiding them through the project while sharing his knowledge, skills, and insights into the significance and positive impact a story pole can have.
This story pole stands as a symbol of our connection to the land and the responsibility we carry to care for it. It reminds us that this small piece of earth represents the larger world we all share. We are the recipients of this land's generosity—its beauty, its lessons, and its life. It is our duty to honour what we receive by respecting and nurturing this place.
The trails around us are more than paths; they are opportunities to tread lightly, to learn, and to leave a legacy of stewardship. This story pole serves as a powerful reminder for us all to reflect when we walk these trails:
What story do we want to tell?
What legacy will we leave behind?
When others enter this land, what will they find?
Let this story pole remind us that how we treat this land reflects who we are. Together, we can create a legacy of care, respect, and gratitude.
At Aberdeen Hall, we seek to admit well-rounded students who choose to be at our school. We are looking for students who demonstrate leadership through academic performance, involvement in co-curricular activities and civic engagement. We care about our students and seek those who value education and are prepared to enrich our incredible school community.
