Yesterday, the excitement was palpable as Aberdeen Hall Middle School students gathered for a momentous occasion: the launch of our Middle School House Team system. While many of our students are familiar with the Junior School’s longstanding house tradition, this marks the first time house teams have been introduced to the Middle School, bringing a fresh sense of pride, belonging, and community.
The assembly began with an inspiring speech from our Middle School Principal, who reminded students of what it means to wear the gryphon crest.
"Each day you choose to be a part of this community, you are part of something bigger than yourself, something truly remarkable, something to be proud of."
These words set the tone for the day, emphasizing that being a gryphon is more than just a title—it’s a commitment to values, teamwork, and a legacy.
A New Tradition Focused on Belonging
The launch of the Middle School House Team system represents more than just a fun new activity. It’s a chance for students to connect across grades, build camaraderie, and embrace healthy competition.
This student-centered initiative not only strengthens positive student-to-student relationships but also promotes stronger connections between staff and students (both teachers and students are assigned to House Teams). The house system is designed to supplement and support our existing advisory system, providing an additional layer of care and connection.
Each student was assigned to one of four houses, each represented by a unique gryphon and symbol that embody the values of our school.
For returning students, house assignments from the Junior School were carried forward. For new students, the day included an exciting ‘sorting’ ceremony where they were welcomed with resounding cheers by their new housemates. Students were encouraged to show their House Team pride. It was LOUD. Very loud.
"Your house is your community here at school," the Principal explained, "and each house will work together to safeguard the values of our school."
One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the house team symbols, beautifully illustrated by our talented Middle School Illustration Club, led by the very talented Ms. Lin Ye.
The celebration continued with the first official House Team activity—a friendly competition that marked the start of what promises to be an exciting year of teamwork and spirited challenges. By the end of the day, Green and Yellow houses were tied with 5 points each, and Red house earned 2 points. This was only the beginning of what is sure to be a year filled with camaraderie and healthy competition.
As we look ahead, we are confident that this tradition will become a cornerstone of the Middle School experience, creating lasting memories and shaping the character of our students.
At Aberdeen Hall, we seek to admit well-rounded students who choose to be at our school. We are looking for students who demonstrate leadership through academic performance, involvement in co-curricular activities and civic engagement. We care about our students and seek those who value education and are prepared to enrich our incredible school community.
