What defines "Programming Excellence" at Aberdeen Hall? It isn’t just a high-quality curriculum or a modern campus; it is the agility to adapt. It is the ability to look at a student’s progress today and refine our teaching strategy for tomorrow. Across our Junior, Middle, and High Schools, we use data as a high-precision GPS, ensuring our programming is as precise as it is inspiring.
In the Junior School, excellence is achieved through a "whole learner" lens. We use assessments like DIBELS and Primary Insight to understand each child's unique strengths and gaps. This allows our teachers and Learning Strategies staff to provide targeted instruction that meets students exactly where they are.
This commitment is driven by a focus on vertical alignment and instructional consistency. For example, our Math Department Head uses internal data to identify specific numeracy skill gaps. This allows us to coach teachers in delivering deeper conceptual problem solving. In Literacy, we are refining our Kindergarten through Grade 5 scope and sequence to bridge the critical transition from decoding to fluent comprehension. After each assessment, our grade level teams receive targeted "data notes" that highlight specific strengths, such as vocabulary growth or improved fluency. This ensures our coaching model and educator profiles are perfectly synced to support the classroom. When data recently indicated a need for stronger phonemic awareness in the early years, we responded immediately. By integrating the Handwriting Without Tears program and UFLI intervention blocks, students who began the year needing support moved from below benchmark to performing above nationwide standards by the end of the academic year.
As students move into Grade 6 through 8, the focus shifts toward applied reasoning and social emotional development. Our commitment to being a responsive school was most visible in our recent decision to overhaul the weekly timetable. After identifying emerging gaps in fundamental skills, we shifted our schedule to prioritize more instructional time for both ELA and Math. The impact was swift. Our 2026 data shows a remarkable 90% percent of students meeting or exceeding provincial benchmarks in both literacy and numeracy. However, we know that academic potential is tied to emotional safety. Through the Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI), we listened to our students' voices. When they told us they wanted stronger connections and clearer expectations, we responded. We launched wellness groups, expanded our House Team program, and sharpened our school-wide behavioral standards. Even our co-curricular program has evolved based on student feedback. This led to increased funding for STEM activities and leadership initiatives that ensure every student feels they have a place to lead.
In the High School, excellence is measured by a student’s readiness for the world. While our students report a deep sense of belonging through the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Community and Belonging Survey, we also use rigorous external benchmarks to ensure they are academically prepared for the road ahead.
True excellence requires the professional courage to look at areas for growth. After identifying a downward trend in numeracy through Graduation Assessments and AP Calculus data, we took a "mastery first" approach. We re-evaluated our math streams to eliminate mixed grade hurdles and limited class sizes in advanced courses to allow for deeper exploration. We also launched after school tutorial sessions three times a week. These sessions have become a vibrant part of our weekly schedule. They provide a space where students can bridge gaps and build the confidence necessary for university level reasoning in both the humanities and the sciences.
Whether it is a reading fluency check in Grade 1 or an AP data deep dive in Grade 12, every measurement helps us refine our craft. At Aberdeen Hall, we are not just tracking progress; we are fueling it. By balancing foundational excellence with the courage to evolve our instruction, we ensure that every student is understood as a whole learner who is prepared to lead in learning and in life.
The statistics and action plans were compiled by our Division Principals to ensure a transparent, data-informed approach to our programming.
Junior School
Foundational Growth
Following the implementation of our Structured Literacy model and targeted numeracy coaching, our Grade 4 students are now ranked #1 in Kelowna. They continue to perform significantly above provincial averages in both Literacy and Numeracy on the FSA.
Middle School
A Benchmark of Success
2026 data shows 90% of students "On Track" or "Extending" in Literacy and Numeracy benchmarks.
High School
The Path to Mastery
While Graduation Assessment scores in both domains remain well above Provincial and Independent School averages, our commitment to mastery has led to a 3x weekly math tutorial schedule to bridge the gap between foundational skills and AP-level reasoning.
At Aberdeen Hall, we seek to admit well-rounded students who choose to be at our school. We are looking for students who demonstrate leadership through academic performance, involvement in co-curricular activities and civic engagement. We care about our students and seek those who value education and are prepared to enrich our incredible school community.
