Alumni Updates - Axana Merckx

We're checking in with some of our 2019 Grads to see how they're adapting to their new, post-secondary lives.

Last year, 100% of our grads were accepted into post-secondary institutions, and for the next couple of weeks, we'll be highlighting some of their journeys.

This week, we're catching up with Axana Merckx. Axana is what we call a 'lifer' - meaning she attended Aberdeen Hall from Preschool through Grade 12! A talented and dedicated swimmer, Axana has traveled the world competing in her sport. She is currently enrolled at the University of Arizona where she is an NCAA athlete on the Swimming and Diving Team.

Axana is studying Political Science with a concentration in International Relations and a minor in French. We're keeping our eye on you Axana, we see great things in your future!

Here's what Axana had to say about her time at Aberdeen Hall and her transition into university life.

1.Tell us your Aberdeen Hall story.

I attended Aberdeen Hall from Preschool - Grade 12, so I am what you call a ‘lifer’. My parents enrolled me at Aberdeen Hall because they saw it as a great opportunity to help me grow into a successful student and person.

2.What was your favourite part about attending Aberdeen Hall?

My favourite part about Aberdeen Hall was the welcoming and friendly atmosphere, not just among the students but with the teachers as well. Our teachers’ number one priority was of course to ensure we were learning, but I always felt that they were also genuine friends who cared about us as people.

3.How would you describe a typical Aberdeen Hall graduate?

A typical Aberdeen Hall graduate is resilient, passionate, genuine and honest. They won’t give up when times are hard and they are always there to support those around them, including students in the younger grades.

4.What did you do this summer?

This summer I spend time with my family and friends - we also adopted a puppy! On top of that I competed down in California in my last race with my Swim Club - the Kelowna AquaJets.

5.Where are you attending post-secondary? What program are you currently in? What extracurriculars are you involved in (or what activities do you plan to be involved in later in the year)?

I am at the University of Arizona where I am studying Political Science with a concentration in International Relations. I will also be minoring in French. I am a part of the university swim team, and the team environment here is incredible.

6.If you are away from home, what’s that like?

Being away from home can be difficult at times however, I think it’s important to follow your dreams no matter where they take you. Sometimes you have to take big steps in life to chase your goals.

7.What was your first day of university like? Your first week?

The first day of university was hectic to say the least. Finding my classes for the first time was difficult, but I think I’m finally getting the hang of the campus layout! Getting into a routine helps things get easier. Overall, I’m having a ton of fun!

8.What advice would you give to someone in Middle or High School who was thinking about coming to Aberdeen Hall but wasn’t sure?

Middle School and High School can seem scary, especially when you are thinking about switching schools. However, Aberdeen Hall is like a family and no matter what, someone’s got your back. I think one of the most unique things about Aberdeen Hall is the camaraderie across grades. As a younger student, you feel comfortable having conversations with older students and friendships aren’t exclusive to the grade you’re in. Going to school at Aberdeen is something I will be forever thankful for.
